MID-VALLEY LITERACY CENTER


Mission: The Mid-Valley Literacy Center (MVLC) is a faith-base, non-profit organization dedicated to providing quality literacy services through training of volunteers, consultation for community organizations and delivery of effective literacy programs to adult students who are English Language Learners (ELL).




Vision: We are dedicated to the expansion of literacy programs for adults students in order to increase the educational and vocational opportunities of families.




We provide the following services for churches and community organizations:



1. Training of volunteer tutors (initial 12 hours of training plus on going workshops covering relevant topics to tutors.)
2. Network with community partners
3. Educational consultation for new tutoring sites
4. Books, materials and curriculum consultation
5. Diagnostic and language assessment services for adult students
6. Consultation for ELL to assist them with the transition to appropiate community college programs




Tutoring sites should provide a site coordinator and help with the recruitment of volunteers.
Tutoring may include, but is not limited to, any of the following topics:

1. Basic, intermediate and advance English for ELL (English conversation,reading and writing skills)
2. GED preparation in English or Spanish (Reading,Writing, Science, Social Studies and Math)
3. U.S. Citizenship preparation with U.S. History/Civics
4. Basic computer skills
5. Parenting skills
6. Job related vocabulary
7. Job safety
